Assassinate
I was chatting with Rachel Lucas' brother Rick last night, and was reminded of a silly comment I made over a year ago in this thread on the word asstastic. We have all sorts of words and phrases like asshat and ass biscuit and I was forced to wonder how Shakespeare came up with assassinate. So I hypothesized.
If we had Shakespeare's notes we could see all of his rejects before he got to "assassinate"
assclownify – no
assdictify – no
asslash - hmmm. no (useable?)
asshatify - no
assault - used
asscan - no
asskick - used
asspass - no, too close to gas
asspike - hmmm. impale? – no
assgig - impale? no
assbutt - no
assass - no
assassate - hmmm. no
asshatinate - hmmm. hmmm. no
assassinate - That's it!
I'd normally be Fisking and pontificating today, but I've been crunching more numbers and it takes up too much time.

Origin of the word "assassin":
The origin of the organisation's name is unclear. Maalouf follows a number of Ismaili sources in affirming that "assassin" is derived from the Arabic assass (foundation), via assassiyun (fundamentalists); they were simply believers in a purer and more basic form of Islam. A more highly-coloured derivation, favoured by Western writers, points to the Arabic hashashshin (eaters of hashish) to explain both the name of the Assassins and their fanatical devotion to their leader, the Old Man of the Mountain: their sanguinary tactics were fueled by narcotics.
