Double Click

Microsoft was just awarded a patent, number 6,727,830, on the "double-click". Give me a fucking break.

And while I'm on the topic of things you should click, the Politburo Diktat has a nice interview with Wonkette.

I don't get it. How can they patent a double click?

And MACs had that 15 years ago btw.

If someone slid through a patent on Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Microsoft would go out of business the next day.

God I love the patent office.

Wonkette has managed to turn blogging into junior high school lunch room gossip. Woo woo. Color me unimpressed.

No no no.

The slashdot article was written by an idiot.

The patent is for a pda device that does different things to an application depending on how long you hold the button.

Click the button and the application launches.
Click the button twice and the application launches with a blank document.
Hold the button for one second and release and the application launches the last document opened.
Hold the button for two seconds and release and the application launches the next to the last document opened.

IkkonoIshi is correct.

A method and system are provided for extending the functionality of application buttons on a limited resource computing device.

Double-click is mentioned as an illustrative example but is not in and of itself patented.

Even so, I think patents of this sort are granted because the patent office is clueless about computers and software.

Ctrl-Alt-Delete is already patented. See http://www.gannettonline.com/e/trends/18001162.html
